About Us
"Owing to the great scarcity of American dry-fly literature, and a very general desire manifested by many anglers of the writer's acquaintence for information on the subject of the floating fly, early in 1911, the author was requested by the editor of Field and Stream to write a few articles for beginners. He consented, but being unwilling to pose as an expert, or even as one of the American anglers most capable of instructing others, in his articles he explained that his position was that of a beginner willing to lend a helping hand to other beginners, to guide them in their first steps on the dry-fly path."
- from the Introduction of "Practical Dry-Fly Fishing", by Emlyn Gill
"In setting forth this information, it is hoped that the advantages derived, will enable the average angler to approximate the prototype more nearly with his artificials; and furthermore, that he will be able to distinguish and classify the more common flies, and can then converse intelligently with those "High Brow" anglers, who speak learnedly on flies, tie their own artificials, and confound the novice with their superior wisdom."
- from the Preface of "Practical Fly Fishing", by Charles M. Wetzel
"Here then is "Practical Fly Fishing,"...this is offered mainly as a text book to help the novice through places where there is rocky bottom, rough water and other hard wading."
- from the Forward of "Practical Fly Fishing", by Larry St. John
As was the desire of Emlyn Gill, Charles M. Wetzel and Larry St. John in their day, it is the ideal of this website, Practical Fly Fishing, that it too can follow the path of helping those who want to nurture their desire to learn fly fishing into a full blown passion. The site was intentionally set up as a blog, to encourage interaction between those more experience anglers and those less experienced. It is the ideal of this site that these, as Charles M. Wetzel put it, "High Brow" anglers, will be willing to lend their practical advice on fly fishing.
Unlike when Emlyn Gill realized the need for more information, today the world wide web is a great big place. And, one can spend hours and hours searching and pouring over the possibly hundreds or thousands of fly fishing related websites encompassed within its net. Many of these site are simply fascinating, others admittedly are not so fascinating. It is the hope that his web site will, as both of its namesakes, provide enough practical fly fishing advice and information to place it into the former category among web surfing-fly fishers. Its intent is to provide a place anglers can come to and get a sense for what is the latest in fly fishing gear or equipment and where the hot-spot fly fishing destinations are. Are you looking for fishing tips, advice on brushing up on some techniques, cool fly fishing videos with breathtaking action and scenery? Hopefully you'll find enough of it here to keep coming back or subscribe to our updates.
So, take a look around, feel free to comment, offer your advice, tips or commentary. If you've got a website you think we should know about, tell us about it.
Tight lines.
